Differences between EN856 4SP and 4SH wire-reinforced rubber hoses
Both 4SP and 4SH are certified under the global EN 856 industrial standard, as heavy-duty 4-wire spiral hydraulic hoses designed for high-pressure fluid transmission across harsh working conditions. Though they share the same base standard, their targeted structural designs create completely differentiated performance boundaries to match distinct operational demands.
Core Structural Design Breakdown
The two hoses adopt identical inner and outer rubber base materials: the inner tube is made of oil-resistant Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) to withstand long-term erosion from hydraulic oil, and the outer cover uses weather-resistant synthetic rubber to resist abrasion, ozone corrosion and outdoor aging. All their structural differences focus on the steel wire reinforcement layer:
- 4SP: 4 layers of high-tensile steel wires are wound in a 54° to 55° interlaced pattern, with adhesive rubber fully injected between every two wire layers to form an integrated bonded structure. The steel wires are relatively thin, and the outer rubber cover follows the standard thickness specified in the EN 856 regulation.
- 4SH: 4 layers of thicker high-tensile steel wires are arranged in a tight non-cross spiral winding layout, with no overlapping or interlacing between adjacent wire layers. Its outer rubber cover is 30% thicker than that of 4SP, delivering far stronger protection against external impact, sharp object punctures and severe friction.

For the 1" ID specification, 4SP delivers a 38MPa working pressure with a ~95MPa burst threshold, while 4SH hits 42MPa working pressure and an ultra-high 168MPa minimum burst pressure, nearly doubling the safety margin.
- Service Lifespan: The interlaced wire structure of 4SP supports a minimum 500,000-cycle pulse test rating, while 4SH’s non-cross thick wire layout reduces localized stress concentration drastically, pushing its pulse life to over 1,000,000 cycles, making it far more durable under frequent pressure fluctuations.
- Installation Flexibility: 4SP’s thin interlaced wires and standard rubber cover give it excellent flexibility, with a 1" ID hose having a bending radius of only ~340mm, making it easy to route through narrow spaces and complex pipeline layouts. 4SH’s thicker wires and heavier rubber cover make it stiffer, with the 1" ID model requiring a ~450mm minimum bending radius, so it needs reserved installation space to avoid sharp bends that could damage the internal structure.
- Cost Positioning: 4SP is set as the baseline cost model, while 4SH is priced 15% to 25% higher due to its higher material input and more precise manufacturing process.
Targeted Selection Rules
There is no absolute "better" model between the two — the optimal choice depends entirely on your actual working conditions:
- Pick 4SP for cost-effective performance when your system pressure stays below 40MPa, the hose needs frequent bending, and the inner diameter is under 1". It perfectly fits medium-high pressure loops on excavators, loaders, agricultural tractors, injection molding machines, port cranes and general industrial hydraulic systems.
- Upgrade to 4SH without hesitation for scenarios with large inner diameters over 1", sustained working pressure above 40MPa, frequent pressure shocks or ultra-high pressure demands. It is the non-negotiable reliable choice for mining machinery, oil and gas fracturing equipment, shield tunneling machine propulsion cylinders, ultra-high pressure cleaning systems and large-bore high-pressure main pipelines.
